PyPI Repository Limitations

Explanation

Which packages the Python 3 PyPI Repository can install, and in which version, depends on GraalPy, the Python 3 implementation the scripts run on.

Packages Listed in the Index

PyPI provides no way to know which of its hundreds of thousands of packages are worth proposing, so only the most downloaded ones (500 by default, according to Top PyPI Packages) are listed in the extension index, which the regular search uses. Any other package can still be found by searching without the index, or installed from its name, as described in Install Python Packages. The number of listed packages is set in PyPI Repository Configuration.

Installable Packages

Only the packages providing a wheel without native code (a wheel tagged like py3-none-any) can be installed. A package published only as a source distribution, or only with wheels containing native code, is not supported.

Selected Versions

The versions, the dependencies and the compatibility of a package are evaluated for the Python version implemented by GraalPy, following the Python packaging standards: a pre-release is only selected when no final release matches. The optional dependencies (extras) are never installed.

XWiki <17.10.14, <18.4.7, <18.9.0 Installing a Python package can break the list of the compatible extensions in the "Extensions" section of the administration.
