The permanent directory is the main storage location used by XWiki for persistent data that must not be lost. It is used for:

  • Saving attachments,
  • Storing installed extensions and their metadata,
  • Keeping search indexes,
  • Persisting cache data that is expensive to rebuild,
  • Storing logs, mail queues, and job statuses, etc.

It contains multiple sub-directories that organizes this data. You can find the location of the current permanent directory, as well as configuring it. If misconfigured, XWiki may fall back to the temporary directory (which is unsafe for persistent data).
