Eleni Cojocariu 14.1 1 Enabling an event type says //what// interests you; watching says //where//. A new account watches nothing, so at first it only hears about events that name it, such as a mention, and about the pages it saves, which automatic page watching starts watching for it.

You can watch a page, a page together with its children, a whole wiki, or a user. The button next to the "Edit" button of every page shows what applies to the page you are on:

[[image:watch-state-blocked.png||alt="The watch button in the Blocked state"]]

[[image:watch-state-custom.png||alt="The watch button in the Custom state"]]

* **Followed** means events happening there reach you.
* **Blocked** means they do not.
* **Not set** means you have expressed nothing about this location.
* **Custom** means a filter of yours covers the location but only for some event types or only on one channel, so a single button cannot describe it.

A state is often inherited rather than set on the page itself: following a wiki makes every page in it followed, and the window that opens when you click the button says so, offering the actions that make sense from there.

Watching is implemented as a filter. Following a location creates a custom filter covering every event type and both channels, which is why what you watch appears in the "Custom Filters" table of your [[notification settings>>doc:documentation.xs.user.notifications.change-notifications-settings.WebHome]]. A narrower filter you wrote yourself is what puts the button in the "Custom" state, and a filter that contradicts the action you ask of the button is disabled rather than silently ignored: following a space you had told the wiki to ignore disables the ignoring filter, and you can switch it back on afterwards.

Eleni Cojocariu 12.1 23 Pages you work on are also watched for you, to the extent the "Automatic page watching" setting allows; [[Notification Setting Options>>doc:documentation.xs.user.notifications.change-notifications-settings.options.WebHome]] lists what each of its values does.
