Explanation
An application is a self-contained set of wiki Pages. It needs no build and no deployment: a Page already carries a script and structured data as well as text, which is what makes XWiki a second generation wiki.
The Pages of an application export into a single XAR archive, which can be imported into another wiki. Published as an Extension, that archive becomes something anyone can install, which is how the ready-made applications on the Extensions catalogue are distributed.
