Eleni Cojocariu 2.1 1 The [[Notifications Application>>doc:extensions:Extension.Notifications Application.WebHome]] decides which of the events recorded on the wiki reach which user, and on which channel. An administrator sets what every account starts from and how much work the feature is allowed to do.
2
3 Preferences are resolved from three levels, each overriding the one before it: the main wiki, the current wiki, then the user. What you set in the administration is therefore a default, which any user can change for themselves in their own profile. [[Configure the Default Notification Settings>>doc:documentation.xs.admin.notifications.configure-default-settings.WebHome]] covers the administration section, and [[Create Global Notification Filters>>doc:documentation.xs.admin.notifications.create-global-filters.WebHome]] the filters copied into every new account.
4
5 The mail the feature sends is rendered from a wiki page, so its wording and layout are yours to change: see [[Customize the Notification Email Template>>doc:documentation.xs.admin.notifications.customize-email-template.WebHome]]. The settings UI itself is available as wiki macros, documented in [[Notification Settings Macros>>doc:documentation.xs.admin.notifications.settings-macros.WebHome]], which is how a wiki can expose part of it outside the profile.

Eleni Cojocariu 6.1 7 Everything that is not a per-user preference lives in ##xwiki.properties##, listed in [[Notification Configuration Properties>>doc:documentation.xs.admin.notifications.configuration-properties.WebHome]]; two of them switch the feature and its mail channel off, as [[Enable or Disable Notifications>>doc:documentation.xs.admin.notifications.enable-disable-notifications.WebHome]] describes. Those defaults are deliberate: notifications cost a search per user and per request, and the number of filters grows quickly on a wiki where automatic page watching is left on, so changing the thread pools or the cache is a response to a measured problem rather than routine tuning.
